Description
The Jaguar (Phantera onca) is South America’s biggest and best-known feline and its only a ‘big cat’. Extinct over much of its former range, it is thinly distributed but widespread across the neotropics. Jaguar, up to 1.8m in length and weighting up to 136kg, are the only predators big enough to tackle full-grown tapir, pouncing to break the spinal cord behind the neck. The name jaguar comes from the Indian word yaguar meaning ‘he who kills with one leap’ (Harris & Hutchison, 1998).
