Author story about the species

This Gongora species orchid is perhaps a new species to add to the around 85 species already described. Like little hovering falcons I was challenged to paint the mossy background after painting the flowers – that only last a few days. These flowers are pollinated by solitary Euglossine bees, every species appears to produce a different fragrance and amazingly the fragrance changes during the day. Male bees visit the orchid flowers to collect volatile chemicals to store in hind-leg pouches for courtship. Gongora can be found in the canopy of edges of steamy Amazon forest, often with enormous life-giving leaves and strange cactus like pseudobulbs.
