Author story about the species

What is known about Restrepia orchid ecology could be written on the back of a small envelope. The genera has around 72 species with variable markings described as subspecies. This one was found growing deep in the high Peruvian cloudforest of Chanchamayo clinging to a vine. The function of the three ‘butterfly’ antennae (adapted sepal and petals) is unknown whilst the spotting patterns of the translucent glowing flowers presented a challenge to paint. They are thought to be pollinated by small flies.
