Author story about the species

Trichocentrum pulchrum was the second orchid I painted in Peru 1995, and still has an early naïve Victorian painting feel. I used watercolours, but not the standard watercolour techniques, (using translucent layers with the white page for light); I used titanium white as it was more controllable. The species is widely distributed throughout the Andes from around 1000 -1800 m elevation. Very little is known about its ecology but a close relative Trichocentrum pumilum is known to have evolved to produce an oily exudate that attract oil-collecting bees that use the lipids for nest waterproofing. Trichocentrum is a large genus of around 100 species with many commercial hybrids.
