Description

Author story about the species

Most tropical orchids are epiphytic (growing on trees), this Koellensteinia is one of the few terrestrial orchids I have illustrated and doing so in an abstract way from a description of its habitat in the Andes. The species appears be adaptable, growing in open shrubby sites, up to a thousand metres, or in lowland Amazon where it evolved with the megafauna opened clearings. Very little is known about this mysterious orchid – hence the sky!
